Samenvatting
The assessment of cost of a proposed work against the value of the benefits arising from the work provides a rational basis for the selection between alternative proposals. The concepts of cost-benefit analysis and some of the alternative methods of calculation are presented; some of the consequent difficulties in appraisal (particularly in assigning monetary values to semi-intangible advantages and disadvantages) are discussed.
