The economic loss to society from motor vehicle accidents which occurred in 1980 is estimated to have been $ 57.2 billion. Of this total, about $21.0 billion resulted from property damage. $3.3 billion resulted from medical costs, and $18.7 billion was caused by other costs such as insurance administration expense, legal and court costs, emergency services, coroner/medical examiner costs and the administrative cost of public assistance programs.
