Samenvatting

This paper presents the Visual Communication Network (VCN) as a good example of the Advanced Traveller Information Systems (ATIS) application in public transport to produce an economically sustaining product that benefit all passengers, including those with disabilities. The VCN system has been implemented in the Montreal metro, the New York Transit Authority, the New York Penn Central Rail Station, the Paris regional transit system (RERC), and the Kansas City International Airport. The paper then defines sustainable transportation technology and systems. It postulates that the transportation systems of the future need to be sustainable in more ways than one: access to all, inclusive decision-making, environmental protection and safety, and economic viability. To demonstrate how these criteria could be applied, the VCN is used here as a case study. (A)
