Samenvatting
Research was conducted to examine prevailing rural design standards to determine their economic justification. Selected data are presented on the current condition of low-volume roads. The report next examined current standards for roadbed widths and surface types. New road designs were presented. Construction, maintenance, vehicle operating, and accident costs were derived for various typical low-volume roadway designs. In addition, the economic effects of standards for vertical and horizontal alignments also were examined. It is concluded that present day standards for low-volume roads should be examined by appropriate highway officials based on economic considerations.
