Education and training of highway safety professionals in the United States.

The passage of the landmark US transportation legislation in August, 2005 (called SAFETEALU) imposed comprehensive requirements on each state to development a Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP). As a result of the of SAFETEA-LU provisions and a shift in emphasis to substantive safety, there is a significant need to provide transportation professionals, university students, and others engaged in highway safety with new and more focused transportation safety education and training. Understanding and applying the appropriate methodologies to address safety problems is more essential today than ever before. The objective of this paper is to summarize recent efforts in the United States to provide these enhancements safety education and training. Existing programs and course offerings are cited. The paper concludes with suggestions for other focus issues recommended to continue to improve safety training, including the need to integrate international experiences in the US. (A).
