In the Netherlands, there are three institutes involved in the training of traffic engineers: (1) Delft University of Technology; (2) the Institute of higher education in the city of Leeuwarden; and (3) the Netherlands Institute of Tourism and Transport Studies, department of Transport and Traffic in Tilburg. These institutes have to use two government policy documents as a basis for their education of traffic engineers; namely: (I) the Second Structure Scheme on Traffic and Transport (SVVII); and (II) the Bicycle Master Plan. A lot of skills relating to different subjects are developed and trained in their 4-year fulltime traffic engineering course. The paper concludes that a traffic engineer should be a generalist and not a specialist. The aimed turnaround from car use to public transport and bicycle use in the Netherlands creates an extra challenge for the three institutes. At this moment, they are busy adapting their courses.
