The intermodal transport combines the system advantages of road and rail. The dynamics of its growth in the past few years, which will probably continue into the future, necessitate a fundamental strategic reappraisal of how the future intermodal transport should be designed and economically run. With the help of a system simulation backed up by electronic data processing, the intermodal transport can be reconceived even under greatly altered marginal conditions.
