This paper presents a theoretical explanation for performance problems of asphaltic concrete mixes. The theory is based on the volumetric composition of the mixes. The bitumen film thickness is of vital importance to the durability of the mix, and so the mineral aggregate surface has to be taken into account when designing the ideal mix. Recommendations are made for further research for investigating the manufacture, laying and performance of such a mix.
