Samenvatting

This report mainly offers an interim exploration of how practical supervision for young, novice lorry drivers during their probationary period could be effected in The Netherlands through a formalized mentor system. Based on a literature study, an inventory was made of the available information about the operation of a mentor system. The experiences gained with practical supervision in The Netherlands are also described. Therefore, interviews were conducted with representatives from five small and medium-sized transport companies in The Netherlands. The practical guidance of novice drivers is considered to be useful and essential. At the same time, the introduction of a mentor system should correspond should correspond with a company's efficiency considerations. A more specific formalization of practical supervision through the appointment of a mentor driver with a specific task description is not considered very attractive. A formalized mentor system could become more attractive for transport companies under the following conditions: (1) The turnover amongst drivers is sufficiently high; (2) The job of mentor driver can be coordinated without too much difficulty or can be realized within the existing activities of the company. The job of mentor driver will not detract from the performance of other jobs; and (3) the job of mentor not only involves the optimization of safety, but also benefits the company's efficiency.
