The analysis in this report provides a description of a normative performance in handling a bicycle (or moped). This report offers the opportunity to determine the "starting-point" of the authors' target population in traffic systematically in relation to their reports vk 85-07 and vk 85-12. The latter reports contain observed behaviour of the target population and the underlying cognitive processing in the execution of the task of riding a bicycle (or moped) respectively. Next to a short description of the necessary basic skills, the task of riding a bicycle (or moped) within the physical constraints of the existing dutch traffic system, is central in this analysis. The riding task itself is divided into four main tasks: preparation, start, execution and finishing the ride. The execution of the ride is subdivided into a number of subtasks, in two categories: - riding in different circumstances, such as residential precincts, level crossings etc. - manoeuvring on cross-roads (going to the left, straight-on or to the right) under different circumstances (traffic-lights, etc.) The task descriptions are in terms of concrete, observable actions without referring explicitly to underlying cognitive processes. This is operationalized in two forms. Each subtask is worked out in flow-charts coupled with a verbal description. The flow-charts offer a quick overview of the most important elements of the subtask, whereas the verbal descriptive analyses offer a greater detail in most cases.
