Contrary to the aims of transport policy that advocate sustainable modes of transport, transport of containers by road has been growing tremendously over recent years. Intermodal transport has to meet the requirements of the shippers/consignors and consignees in order to increase its market share, bearing in mind the free choice of transport. Research indicates that intermodal transport, including some minor adjustments, is a realistic alternative to the majority of companies. This is based on interviews with terminal operators and shipper questionnaires in the Twente region in the Netherlands. The recently updated intermodal transport policy is well suited for the future.
