This contribution will attempt to: (a) estimate the key structure of Dutch travel demands based on time-series data of consumer expenditures on travel modes and other goods and services; (b) identify any systematic changes in the structure of travel preferences over time, based on the data; (c) measure elasticities of demand for travel modes with respect to own and cross-prices, per-capita income, and other measurable variables; and finally (d) predict the changes in the demands for different modes of passenger transportation under the changes in pricing policy anticipated under the goals of a sustainable society programme. The demand model was derived from a translog utility function and estimated from the monthly time-series data for the period from January 1977 to August 1991.
