Samenvatting

As the number of roundabouts is steadily on the increase, a variety of types, applications and priority situations have emerged as a result. This development is at odds with the vision on Sustainable Safety, whose very objectives are unambiguity and uniformity. The aim of this publication is, therefore, to formulate clear recommendations for the design and construction of single lane and two lane roundabouts on the basis of current applications and studies between roads of equal status. In order to have uniform roundabouts, as envisaged in the Sustainable Safety plan, all roundabouts need to be situated, (re)designed and built in such a way that motor vehicles approaching them have to give way to traffic moving on the roundabout. On the use and implementation of priority rules for cyclists and pedestrians one uniform recommendation is given: within built-up areas: priority for cyclists, unhindered passage for pedestrians; outside built-up areas: no priority for cyclists, no unhired passage for pedestrians.
