Samenvatting

Three rural road sections with previous accident histories were subjected to programmed random police enforcement for a two year period, by means of conspicuous static vehicles. Compared with both previous accident history at the three sites and accident occurrence on other rural roads, the subject routes displayed a significant 60 per cent reduction is serious casualty accidents. It is suggested that this type of accident deterrence operation represents an opportu- nity for police to achieve sustained accident reduction from routine manpower resources.
