The report is based on the analysis of ca. 4900 police-reported traffic accidents that had taken place within certain areas in six Swedish, two Finnish and one Norwegian town. In these areas the traffic environment was investigated in detail, and car traffic volume data was gathered for all ca. 2100 junctions and ca. 3400 links. The most common accident type was a right angle conflict between motorists. It is important that the number of lanes on the junction's approaches is as few as possible. Accidents involving pedestrians and bicyclists occur generally on marked pedestrian crossings. The definition of personal injury is not the same in the Nordic countries, which it ought to be.
