The effect of bridge shoulder width on traffic operational characteristics. Paper prepared for the 55th Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board TRB, Washington, D.C., January 1976.

The objective of the study was to investigate the effect of two, four, and six-foot curbing on a bridge with ten-foot shoulders on the operational characteristics of vehicles on and in the vicinity of the bridge. The test results indicated a definite effect of curbing width on vehicle speeds and placements. The vehicle speeds with curbing in place were significantly lower than without curbing. There was a significant interaction between positions and conditions for vehicle placement.
