Samenvatting

A systematic investigation has been made to relate traffic accidents to pavement condition. This was done within the framework of an engineering- economic survey on the rentability of investment in maintaining the rural highway network of Israel. The paper describes quantitatively some examples by which the improvement of pavement conditions caused a significant reduction in the number of traffic accidents of up to 40%. Emphasis is made on the reduction of accidents related to skidding in wet conditions.
