The effect of pavement surface properties on the stopping distance of vehicles

Samenvatting

Research has indicated that at 100 km/h the skid resistance of road surfaces, is dependent on both the texture depth of the surface (macrotexture) and the polished stone value of the surfacing stone (microstructure). The skid resistance at 25 km/h, however has been found to depend mainly on the polished stone value. Stopping distances were calculated by taking into account the decrease in skid resistance when speed is increased, and from the above relationships the effect on stopping distance of surface properties at different speeds was analysed.
