The addition of a protective covering can reduce the amplitude of the pressure pulse in the brain by a factor 10 relative to the bare head. A combination consisting of a hard outer shell with a soft, energy-dissipating interior lining is more effective than for a helmet composed solely of hard exterior even for pulses with durations as short as those analyzed in this paper.
