Samenvatting

The aim of the paper is to examine the effect of shoulder design on accident rates on rural highways. The paper describes the types of shoulder designs used briefly, discusses the available literature and describes an analysis of accident rates on roads with different shoulder types. The paper concludes that although the accident study had a number of identifiable deficiencies the large difference in ac- cident rates found and the support from american literature suggest that sealed shoulders have a real effect in reducing accidents.
