Samenvatting

This paper presents a computer-based method for spatial dynamic simulation of vehicles and its application to driving simulation of vehicles with semi-active ECS (Electronic-Controlled Suspension) units. For mathematical modelling of a vehicle, D'Alembert's variational equations of motion for a system of rigid bodies are formulated using relative coordinates. Based on the method, a computer simulation program is developed. Using the program, dynamic simulation of a model of passenger car with a semi-active ECS, in which adjustable dampers are considered, is performed and its effect on ride quality, road holding performance and handling characteristic of the vehicle are discussed. Also, it is shown how semi-active damping can be considered effectively in the conceptual design phase of a vehicle suspension system.
