Samenvatting

Bus driver safety must be emphasized as part of government public transportation policy. Bus drivers may use some in-vehicle communication systems while driving. This study explores the effects of using hand-free cell phones and hand-held wireless communication devices while driving from an ergonomics viewpoint. Both types of devices, according to experimental results using a bus driving simulator, increased drivers' response time to sudden events (i.e., the lead vehicle breaking unexpectedly), especially when those events occurred immediately after the driver finished the communication task.
