Samenvatting

From 1984-1987 public transport fares have been (and will be) increasing. This might cause a shift in mode use. Stichting Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek Verkeersveiligheid (SWOV), has tried to examine the safety consequences of this change in modal split. At first a rough estimation is made of the number of persons changing from public transport to other modes. Secondly the chances of traffic accidents in the different situations are compared. It can be concluded that this fare policy will influence traffic safety in a negative way. A predictive study like this one makes it possible to include traffic safety in (e.g.) decision making of public transport fares. Yet this way of decision making calls for clear political views on (in this case) mobility on one hand and traffic safety on the other.
