The aim of the report was to research the consequences that traffic measures, taken for the care of the environment, could have on traffic safety. These traffic measures could be taken to prevent or to decrease the burden, the hindrance, the damage or the attack of the nature or the function of the environment. Important measures are (1) decreasing traffic intensities in a certain area, eventually by introducing restraint for certain transport modes, (2) the improvement of traffic flow (3) the decrease of speed and (4) regulation of parking. In addition, the road administrator can make provisions for the pavement or hard shoulder. With the aid of indicators, which indicate the average lack of safety on different categories of roads, the effects on traffic safety from a number of measures, can be calculated. It is described how with the aid of those indicators the effects of the measures can be quantified into terms of the number of accidents with victims. The indicators can also be used to detect traffic situations which are less safe than the national average in the same kind of situation. It is concluded that different measures taken for the care of the environment do influence traffic safety.
