Samenvatting

Since April 1, 1992, the use of wearing seat belts on the rear seats of cars (if present) is mandatory in the Netherlands. Besides, the Dutch government is willing to improve the mandatory use of safety belts on the front seats of cars. In this report, a presentation is given of the effects to be expected on traffic safety in terms of a reduction of victims (fatalities and serious injuries) in the year 2000 as a result of the increase of the use of seat belts. The reduction was calculated for occupants both on front and rear seats of cars, using 1985 and 1990 as reference years. As the Dutch government is intended to conduct an evaluation of the seat belt usage in 1994, the prognoses are given specially for this year, using 1990 as reference year.
