Samenvatting

The application of telematics in traffic and transport is a possible approach to limit the present problems concerning urban functioning such as congestion and environmental pollution. However, the effects of telematics could be opposite, when spatial planning is not thoroughly taken into account. A model study shows that people will travel even farther and urban sprawl above the regional level will continue to grow. These possible effects and their causes are analysed. Based on this, an urban area design is proposed in which telematics and spatial planning are integrated. This paper shows that this spatial plan will result in a strong reduction of both the number of trip kilometers, and the use of insufficiently environmentally friendly transport modes. This is achieved by focusing on the accessibility by both telematics, and by foot and bicycle. This is in contrast with the present accessibility policy that focuses on car and public transport.(A)
