Samenvatting

This synthesis provides an assessment of the current status of park-and-ride facilities, which are intended to provide easy access to change from low occupancy vehicles to higher occupancy transit or highway use by carpools and vanpools. The various aspects of park-and-ride facilities, including conceptual issues, location factors, demand estimating procedures, design considerations, administration and operation of facilities, including funding, maintenance, and other supporting elements are addressed. This report also provides information on the current usage of park-and-ride facilities throughout the US, operating and maintenance practices at selected sites, descriptions of safety and security measures used at various facilities, and the relationship of ridesharing and travel demand management (TDM) programs to the success of park-and-ride facilities.
