Samenvatting

Helmets for cyclists began to be produced towards the end of the 1970s. Few were seen in Britain, however, until the mid 1980s. Early helmet promotion was largely by the helmet manufacturers, making claims and counter-claims about the merits of their particular helmet design. All this changed at the end of the 1980s following the publication of reports suggesting that if cyclists wore helmets, their likelihood of head injury would be reduced considerably. From that time, the promotion of helmet wearing for cyclists has been a main thrust of road safety practitioners and legislators in many western countries. (Author/publisher)
