Samenvatting

In this report a synthesis is given of the state of the art of the (obligatory) use of Daytime Running Lights (DRL) by motorcycles in the European Union. In particular, attention is given to Austria. In this country a new law was introduced in 1982. Using a generalised linear model, it has been found that this law reduced the number of victimised motorcyclists in daytime multiple accidents by about 16%. This result has been generalised in a rough manner for the expected effect of DRL as a motor vehicle standard in the European Union, which predicts about 7% less fatalities and victims in the European Union.
