This paper reports two recent studies of parking guidance and information (PGI) systems, in Nottingham, England, and Frankfurt am Main, Germany, with which the authors have been associated. A PGI system's evaluation must consider a wide range of indicators, reflecting its nature and different objectives. The results of previous studies of PGI systems suggest that they can influence some drivers, especially drivers who visit an area less often, but that local drivers tend to use them mainly to support their prior decisions. The Nottingham PGI system is based on information broadcast on two local radio stations just before Christmas, when there is a substantial increase in the total demand for total demand for parking, so that long queues occur. The short broadcast messages inform drivers about: (1) car parks with queues, and estimated queuing times; (2) car parks with spaces; and (3) the current status of park-and-ride facilities. Its study used a two-stage survey with interviews and mailed questionnaires. The Frankfurt PGI system is descriptive, and advises drivers first about central parking areas, and then about specific facilities. Its study had three waves of observations, counts and interviews. The results of the studies are presented in some detail.
