Samenvatting

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the public posting of speeding information trial in terms of reducing the frequency and severity of accidents occurring on the experimental road (Mounts Bay Road). This was achieved by examining the accident history of Mounts Bay Road on the section used for the trial, compared with two controls: (1) Winthrop Avenue, and (2) the whole Perth metropolitan area. The results of the study, while not conclusive, are supportive of the position that public posting of speeding information is a worthwhile road safety strategy. It is suggested that public posting of speeding information in conjunction with appropriate police enforcement could provide a relatively inexpensive method of driver speed control and this strategy should not be discarded. It is also recommended that a follow-up study to allow a more thorough and conclusive analysis be completed. (A)
