In Jordan, road safety audit has not been adopted. To convince decision makers to adopt this tool, it is necessary to quantify the potential benefits arising from the safety improvements as a result of the audit. Through the last a few years, the accident problems at specific sites, which were constructed during the last eight years in Mafraq district, were addressed in different professional meetings. Consequently, the geometric design layouts of most of these sites were improved. Arguably, these geometric improvements could have been adopted if an audit had been undertaken. The sites included different interchanges, roundabouts, and highway sections. In this study, the geometric deficiencies or the lack of self-enforcement through geometric design at the investigated sites were identified. The geometric improvements that were undertaken or the proposed improvements and their related costs were computed or obtained from the relevant agencies. Road accidents on the investigated sites were obtained from police records. Benefit-cost analysis indicated that road safety audit is very beneficial and effective in preventing road accidents or in reducing the accident severity. (Author/publisher)
