Samenvatting

The paper summarises the first two years of work on a project with the objective to evaluate the possibility to increase the number of cyclists through an improved maintenance and operational standard of the cycle road network. The importance of the operational and maintenance standard is not well known. The work focuses on winter maintenance. A questionnaire survey in two cities at four larger companies were undertaken in order to reveal factors influencing mode choice, attitudes towards cycling in the wintertime and about winter maintenance. Following this different methods of snow clearance and for skid control were tested at two selected cycle paths. Evaluations were made through expert observation, roadside interviews and through friction measurements. Comparisons with cycle tracks where ordinary winter maintenance were carried out were also made.
