This paper evaluates the effectiveness of ignition interlock devices as a deterrent to a repeated drunk driving arrest in a sample of persons convicted of driving under the influence (DUI). Records of 273 drivers given the interlock devices were compared with those of 273 matching drivers who had their licenses suspended. The devices substantially reduced the incidence of a repeated DUI arrest as compared to license suspension during the 30 months period studied. Evidence of sanction circumvention was also substantially lower in the interlock group.
