Samenvatting

In part I of this report observations of traffic flow were undertaken at two intensities of artificial illumination and during daylight. Accident data were analysed for changes in accident rates that could be related to the change in illumination, and a comparative study involving traffic stream characteristics is presented. The systems Research Group of the Ohio State University studied the effects of illumination changes on driving performance. These studies are reported in Part II of this report. Test subjects drove an instrumented vehicle under two illumination levels and their driving performance was compared. Presented in part III of this report is a visual evaluation of illumination in the road way environment. The object of part IV was to measure the effects of fixed lightning conditions on driver attitudes.
