Samenvatting

The paper discusses the findings of a study done in Greater Pretoria to develop an understanding of the implications of route spacing and volume capacity ratio (v/c) on the cost of public transport services and the quality of service. The study found that within the range of the parameters used in the study, increasing the walking distance was generally found to reduce the travel time due to increased vehicle frequency from a larger route catchment, and because of the peaking nature of demand, v/c ratios of less than 0.7 in the case of random vehicle arrival and 0.9 in the case of scheduled vehicle arrivals do not significantly affect passenger travel times.
