Effects of realised traffic measures on the energy consumption in urban transport.

Many cities try to improve their environmental, social and economic situation by introducing traffic measures. The evaluation of the effects of the measures requires appropriate before and after data which, however, only rarely is available. In project EMRECU (Effects of Realised Traffic Measures on the Reduction of Energy Consumption in Urban Transport) co-ordinated by Technische Universitaet Wien, Institut fur Verkehrsplanung und Verkehrstechnik (TUW-IVV, Institute for Transport Planning and Traffic Engineering at the University of Technology Vienna) the effects of various traffic measures on travel patterns and energy consumption have been analysed (Knoflacher et al, 1998). Project EMRECU has been aiming to identify those measures of traffic organisation, transport and city planning that have the potential to reduce transport energy consumption effectively and lastingly. The project was funded by the European Commission in the SAVE Programme. The analyses carried out at TUW-IVV concentrated on Vienna and on several smaller cities in Austria and Southern Tyrol. In project EMRECU the effects of traffic measures on transport energy consumption are calculated based on their effects on mode choice. Thus the study is based on data from mobility interviews of the city population before and after measure realisation.
