In this field experiment, a stroboscopic occluding device was used for manipulating the various optical cues, as used by drivers. In particular, this method was expected to give more insight in the relative value of the visual cue for lateral speed. The result did support the more general notion that information with regard to lateral position only is insufficient for guidance control and hence, may be reacted upon in a more intermittent way. The results are less clear in relation to the use of the visual cue for lateral speed. Some results were even contradictory to the expectations. Possible reasons for this are discussed.
