Samenvatting

The aim has been to study the efficiency of a number of new spray protectors for trucks. Four trucks were equipped with different spray protectors and measurements were made on a sprinkled test track at a speed of 80 km/h and a depth of water of 1-1.5 mm. The impairment of visibility caused by the splashing was measured with a special apparatus in different positions relative to the vehicle. In all, ten different combinations of vehicles and spray protectors were tested. Analyses were made of the spreading of spray and of photographs and films illustrating the formation of spray. The most efficient protectors reduced spray by about 30% compared with the case when swedish standard protectors were used. The report contains a detailed presentation of the measuring and analysis technique. A detailed analysis of the specific properties of each spray protector is also made. A discussion is included about the background of the present situation as regards spray protectors, consequences to environment and road safety as well as possible improvements. Based on the results recommendations are given as to how water spray from heavy vehicles can be reduced.
