In this model, traffic is represented as a time-sequence of vehicle platoons. Each platoon is defined by it's time-duration and volume (veh-s). A sequence of platoons approaching a traffic signal is transformed by the green and red intervals of this signal, and traffic entering or leaving the platoons from or into a side street can be accommodated, each newly transformed platoon-sequence can in processed to subsequent signals. Thus the model applies to any network configuration, and special conditions arising from the number of available lanes, existing signal synchronizations, etc. can be considered.
