Young cyclists and moped riders between the ages 14 and 18 years have quite a high casualty rate. In roughly 60 per cent of the accidents they are involved in they themselves are the cause of the accident, mainly as a result of a traffic regulation violation, with `lack of attention' the next most important factor. The purpose of this investigation was to derive a comprehensive profile of cyclists and moped riders in respect of socio-demographic characteristics, attitudes and driving behaviour. It was also concerned with exposure data which enable the accident risk (the probability per unit of time or distance of being involved in an accident) of cyclists and moped riders to be more accurately determined.
