Samenvatting

This issue of Current Topics includes over 75 abstracts of reports, conference papers, books and journal articles which focus on driving and the elderly in the context of increasingly elderly populations in the industrialised countries. Topics include identification of the effects of aging on driving skills, assessment of driving performance, simulation and identification of high risk drivers. Abstracts are included on specific areas of possible impairment for elderly drivers (such as vision reaction time, judgement of speed and especially safe gap judgement), response of elderly drivers to electronic driving aids, driver retraining, the timing of decisions by elderly drivers to cease driving, and improved highway design for elderly drivers. These items have been selected from the material added to the Transport Research Laboratory's Library Database between 2001 and 2004. Much of the relevant English language published literature from the UK, USA, Australia and Europe is included; some of the non-UK literature is included courtesy of the OECD International Transport Research Documentation (ITRD) database.
