Samenvatting

It is proposed the electrical propulsion of a car through a constant power gas or steam turbine and electrical batteries. Such thermal engine is used at full power, both for recharging the batteries and for power in which it has to be assisted contemporarely by the batteries themselves. For power less than the one of the thermal engine, the vehicle is propelled by the batteries only. Referring to a low power European car, the corresponding SAE J1082 driving cycles (urban, suburban, interstate 55 and 70 mile/h) are deduced. To satisfy all the driving conditions, the needed powers of the thermal engine and of the batteries are determined. For this kind of nonpolluting car engine, the suitable types of gas/steam turbines (also H2 fuelled) are suggested. (A)
