In the Netherlands next to the traveller there are three parties of importance for influencing the modal split and modal shift: public transport operators, (local) government and to some surprise: the payment society. By using payment instruments in the right manner the modal split can be influenced from car usage to usage of public transport. This paper starts with trends in mobility, mobility policy of the Dutch government and payment habits in the Netherlands. Thereafter the authors will describe in more detail why and how the payment society could act as a catalyst for influencing the modal split in the Netherlands. The benefits the payment society could offer to the world of mobility will be illustrated by a description of a few ongoing projects in the Netherlands. At the end of this paper the authors will draw some conclusions.
