The M50 is a key road, not just for Dublin but for Ireland. It has been avictim of its own success and customers can suffer significant delays, especially in peak hours at toll booths. Hence it will be upgraded to provide more capacity as part of the Transport 21 national strategy and the plans of Fingal, South Dublin and Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County and Dublin City Councils. The extension is planned to be from 2 to 4 lanes in each direction and the concession has been rebought from NTR (National Toll Road) bythe National Road Authority (NRA). NRA is a public organization in chargeof road management for the ministry of Transport in Ireland. In addition of lanes extension, in order to cancel that bottle neck due to the toll system with barriers, the NRA has decided to replace the traditional toll system by a free flow system. NRA was in charge of the tender process for: (1) the implementation of the system and (2) the operation for 8 years. Theglobal strategy of the NRA is also to promote the using of a transponder, interoperable all over the others tolling systems in Ireland.
