Samenvatting

This report discusses the "human factors" of electronic in-vehicle route guidance systems. These systems have the potential of eliminating the wastage due to poor routeing, which has been estimated to be of the order of 5 to 7 percent of the total motor vehicle mileage. It is concluded that at least three issues need to be resolved empirically for this potential to be realized. These are: 1) which are the demands to be put upon the criteria employed in the system algorithm that selects optimal routes? 2) should route information be more "command" or more "situational"? 3) what is the optimal way of presenting route information in order to prevent interference with other parts of the driving task which have to be performed simultaneously?
