Samenvatting

This was one of the 1998 TAC Environment Achievement Award Nominations (1). In September 1998, the official opening of Northside Aerated Lagoon for City of Miramichi was conducted. The engineering design concept and construction methods utilized in construction of the embankments for the lagoon and adjacent roadway was of major importance. However, the most significant feature of this project was utilization of garbage material as a structural fill in construction of the earthened embankments and floor of the aerated lagoon and an adjacent roadway. The methodology utilized is not reported in any technical publication and was solely developed in conjunction with this project. This is the only undertaking of this nature in Canada and provides for an innovative and cost effective method for reclaiming and utilizing properties in abandoned dump areas. The report will provide the reader with background information related to the project and the geotechnical parameters involved in construction of facility utilizing the garbage mass. This structure is currently the largest single cell aerated lagoon in the Province of New Brunswick. (A)
