This chapter (Chapter 7 in `Knowledge structures in close relationships : a social psychological approach', edited by G.J.O. Fletcher & J. Fitness, 1996), begins with a brief overview of some current models of emotions, with a particular emphasis on their functional, cognitive, and social aspects. Emotion prototype is discussed, and relevant research on people's socially shared knowledge about various kinds of emotions within marriage is described. Some hypotheses about the role of emotion knowledge structures on close relationship information processing is proposed, along with a review of mood effects on relationship participants' perceptions and inferences about each other's behaviors. Overall, the aim of this chapter is to highlight the potential of the emotion knowledge structure approach for extending and enriching understanding of the emotional lives of couples in close relationships.
