A hand-held device designed to identify drivers impaired by drugs, alcohol or excessive tiredness is being evaluated by the UK police. The prototype device assesses the driver's behaviour rather than testing for particular substances. At least a further two years of testing would be required before the detector is ready for the streets. In tests conducted at a music festival using 170 volunteers, there was a significant difference between those people who had not taken drugs and those who admitted to taking them. Performance enhancing drugs did not enable impaired drivers to beat the test.
