Samenvatting

Some statistical charts are presented about the energy and environment aspects of motor transport in Mexico: (1) the transport share of energy consumption in 1987 and 1992; (2) petrol consumption trends from 1925 to 2025 (projected figures after 1990); (3) stock of motor vehicles from 1925 to 2025 (projected figures after 1990); and (4) fuel consumption per motor vehicle from 1925 to 2025 (projected figures after 1990). These figures are discussed briefly. Recent improvements in fuel efficiency have been associated with policies and measures to reduce the emission of pollutants, and this trend will continue. Ten important technological developments are listed, which contribute to this trend. In addition, efforts have been made in at least seven other areas to achieve a more efficient and cleaner transport system. Mexican policy foe clean, efficient, safe, and adequate motor transport is greatly influenced by the processes of globalisation and increasing openness of trade.
